Lolita is infamous for it's subject of the sexual attraction an older man feels ,Humbert Humbert, for a little girl,Lolita. In this it is widely considered obscene but interestingly enough we don't actually get any sexual scenes in the book between these two characters, though it is to be considered that the narration is coming from Humbert himself. Throughout the book he announces that he served a time in a sanitarium saying it was "fun" to antagonize the workers there.His marriage to Charlotte is thrown into play as another way for him to be closer to Lolita, and after Charlotte threatens to put her in a boarding school he even further expresses his concern of her "purity".
Though he keeps away from Lolita and chooses to admire from a distance to keep her "pure" in earlier chapters , we begin to see him act on his desires in later chapters, his plans to drug Lolita and her mother to molest her and their sex at the the Enchanted Hunters inn. Though in earlier chapters he was very low key, in these chapters his sexual desires for her are more apparent and he is also very violent. As he entraps Lolita even further after her mother's death we begin to see Humbert become over bearing on Lolita to make sure she has little to any contact with people except girls her own age and especially restricts her from boys.

Humbert's and Lolita's relationship seems to be intensifying with the death of her mother, how do you think this will effect Lolita?
Humbert has had multiple plans to kill people ,Valeria, Charlotte, Trapp, do you think he will act on it later in the book?
I feel later on, in the future Lolita will think back to some of the things he did and they might effect her trust in people as she gets older. She might have noticed his major excitement on page 61, when he was rubbing on her bruise. Then she might not have understood or noticed it that much but will probably make connections when she gets older.
ReplyDeleteCalling Humbert a rapist is kind of tricky, in a technical sense, yes, he is guilty of statutory rape, and, yes, he is manipulative of Lolita and her mother in order to get close to the girl in a sexual way. On the other hand, he hasn't been violently insistent or forceful about having sex with her, yet. The nail in the coffin for Humbert is the addition of kidnapping and detainment to his crimes. Once her mother is dead, Lolita had nowhere to go, especially since Humbert tells her when they are away from her home. If I were a judge, I'd have to convict him. GUILTY!
ReplyDeleteBecause he took her by force, just because she didn’t say no doesn’t mean she said yes. I do think he is a rapist because of this. I think their relationship will become rocky. Their relationship isn’t very strong to begin with. I thin lolita only went with him because of her curiosity. Because of his history with violence, it could be safe to say that he could “strike again”
