But Your Honor...

Hubris Humbert Humbert has finally found the one person he begins to care about more than himself, Miss Dolores Haze or as he calls her, Lolita. The latter part of the book really delves into the subconscious of both HH and Lolita. Here, Humbert gives desperate attpempts to hold onto the reminents of his precious jewel by taking any means to find her, kill her husband/stalker Clare Quilty or entertain himself until one of the previous two happens. In the latter half, we really see the danger in repressing one's true self.

Applaud to Nobokaov. He has really analyzed every step of the human mind by fusing the tingling parts of both the readers right brain, and left brain. Logically, every step in his life, Humbert Humbert has had control over every obstacle in his course, accept for his sweets; Annabel Leigh and Lolita. In the first part of the book, the meticulous, left brained HH has used his Byronic good looks and charm to claw his way in and out of women's lives, keeping his left brains sharp. I mean come on he was a professor, multilingual and one hell of a con artist. When he finally got his chance to fulfill his desires, he does not know how to control her to the point to where he is ever fully satisfied.
The latter part of the account focuses on the rekindling his lost love Annabel Leigh with "Looletah" fancied HH lustful tendencies, to the point to where he treasured her as an art form- satisfying that right brain. He is compulsive, calculated and even violent that resulted in the murder of Clare was just a stepping stone. He justifies it through reading what Quilty's desires were as being more devious than his. One could either take his "confession" "that a North American girl child named Dolores Haze has been deprived of her childhood by a maniac, unless this can be proven, (and if it can, life is a joke) "(Nabokov 167, online book) HH is denying his part in ruining her mental state even though he admits to her crying every night (127) by telling Lolita to not mourn CQ, that if one of them had to do it should be him, still trying to give himself the upper hand. HH shows the dangers in repressing emotions and the outcome of what giving into dark desires has.

Do uou think if a case opened today that he would be convicted based solely on his acknowledgements of doing "immoral" acts throughout his account? Plead insane?

Would you justify the art being more than just intellect and emotion, it's a melding of the two for Humber with Lolita since he only wanted to record the account in order to immortalize her as an art form?

Nabokov wanted the reader to be in tune the entire way through. Would you agree with my right brain-left brain analogy?

  1. HH seems like exactly the type to plead insanity if put on trial for his crimes against Lolita. He own pretentious sense of self- satisfaction would spur him to confess his sins once anyone got a whiff of his inclinations; and some half- repentant fox would have him believe that a jury could be swayed by his intellect and "sincerity". He is so convinced of the merit of his feeling for lolitas that an insanity plea would be hard to beat, and maybe even true.
