The Oscar Wilde Trials

Check out this website, "The Oscar Wilde Trials." The site is created by a law professor. It's part of "Famous Trials" series. 

The book was never put on a trial. It was the author himself who was arrested for "gross indecency." At his trials of 1895, the opposing attorneys read aloud from Dorian Gray, calling it a "sodomitical book."

The Picture of Dorian Gray was never banned; it was controversial. Some of the reviewers called it "unclean,""nasty," and "poisonous."

When first appeared in a British magazine, the story had already been censored by the magazine editors. Oscar Wilde also cut portions of the book as he prepared it to be published as a book after the story in the magazine provoked hostile reactions from the British press.
